Exercising Your Soapy Voice
Hi… yeah. So, I didn’t show up for my own Soap Opera Sunday party yesterday. (Soap Opera Sunday is explained here, and soapy posts are filed here). I believe we had two people play without me though: Kate, my gorgeous co-founder, and Ellen, a newcomer to SOS. If others played too, let me know so I can display your links like the lustrous feathers of a peacock in Spring. Or something…
Anyway, I have noticed that my own interest in Soap Opera Sunday has diminished a bit—possibly because I’m wholly incapable of anything requiring structure (i.e. regular blog posts) and possibly because I’d rather be known for other things besides my soapy past. Not sure… And I’m not sure if I’m ready to just do away with the whole thing, or if I should cling to it until my life settles down a bit and I can get back into it. Because, believe it or not, we’re just scratching the tip of the soapy iceberg.
And, the truth is, everyone has soapy tales. I have people tell me all the time that they can’t think of any. But they’re wrong. There are ALWAYS soapy tales. Everyone has that high school crush that ends badly. Everyone has that guy they thought they were going to marry—be it Brad Pitt or the guy who sat in front of them in Algebra. If you’re married, you have a soapy tale. If you’re NOT married, there’s always a story there too. See? You’re already thinking of your own soapy stories, aren’t you!
What I’m getting at is, with only a couple of people playing along every week, I think it may be time to scrap SOS. I mean, good heavens! I’m not even playing along very often anymore, and it’s my game! Though, I DO think that that might change when life settles down a bit—which should be in about a month…
So, let’s take a poll:
Opinion Polls & Market Research
As usual with these polls, your answers are completely anonymous, so I have no way of knowing who voted how. The voting ends on Sunday (April 20) evening.
In other news, we’ve decided to move to Denver. In our hearts, we know that this is where we are supposed to be, even though logic would say that Chicago is a better fit. But, so far, we’ve followed our guts and, so far, our guts have been spot on. So off we go. Hubby starts on May 6, which is only 3 weeks away! HOLY MOLY, but there’s a lot to do before then! I might end up staying here after he goes, at least until we’ve bought a house and it’s ready for us to move in, and possibly until the kids are out of school (though I really wouldn’t have too much of a problem yanking them out a few weeks early. I mean, it’s preschool and kindergarten…).
Oh, and did I mention that my kids have Hand Foot and Mouth Disease? Yeah, that’s been a ragin’ party, let me tell ya. Princess Fluffy had it first, but I didn’t know what it was. I thought she’d just bit her tongue or she had a canker sore or something. But then when Fuzzles (aka Isaac) got it, he GOT it. As is Fuzzles’s way, if someone in the house is a tiny bit sick, he becomes extremely sick. After an entire night of literally NO SLEEP (I crawled into bed for the first time at 6:00 a.m.) because he was writhing and screaming in such agony, I hauled him off to the doctor. He gave me some stuff to give to the kids to help them to feel better, but informed me that the darn bug just has to run its course. We’re now on day five. Fortunately, Bubba and Scooby seem to be unaffected (though Scooby did tell me tonight—in the cutest voice EVER—as he was going to bed that he had a “fever in his mouth”—which, being interpreted, might mean that his mouth hurts). It’s supposedly highly contagious, so I just assume all the little monkeys will get it. But maybe we’ll be lucky this time around.
And that, dear Gentle Readers, brings us up to date. Maybe tomorrow I’ll have something more interesting than basic journaling for you. Maybe…

Hey, you even made me think of a soapy story… from high school. So I could possibly post it anonymously. It’s way too embarrassing to post it on my blog that my extended family reads!
Good luck with the moving crazies! My family stayed behind for a couple months when my dad got a new job. But then we were 7th and 4th grade. And that meant was actually did move in November. It sucked being the new kid in the middle of the school year. Yeah. But I did meet a cute boy… and that’s a whole ‘nother soapy story!
Guess I’d better start writing some drafts for your anonymous blog!
Good Luck with the move - I’m sure you’ve made the right decision.
With regards to SOS - I haven’t played much lately, but my life has been really inconsistent on the weekends lately. And with what’s going on with you lately, it’s combined to make more inconsistency. But that’s okay.
I think it’s worth resurrecting once you’re more stable.
Hand Foot & Mouth = yuck. We’ve escaped it thus far (knock on a sequoia-sized chunk o’ wood), but we’ve had many friends who have been afflicted. Bummer!
But how exciting about Denver!!!!! Always trust the gut, says I. Can’t wait for more news about the transition!
The Mile High City. Awesome. We will miss you…even though I really only see you via cyberspace. ( ” In my heart I will miss knowing that you used to be only minutes away…
It would be great if you could at least finish your latest soapy story line and then you can end it (your last soapy post was on March 8). Or you could just tell us if this is the guy you are still married to!
Denver is a beautiful city, but remember to drink lots of water and always have hand lotion and moisturizer available. Good luck!
Sniffle, sob. I guess Denver is just as far away from Phoenix as Provo. Sniffle.
I will agree to come visit only if you agree to reciprocate. Sniffle.
SOB
I’m not nearly as diligent in my soap opera sunday participation after we instituted our ‘electronic free Sundays’ at our house.
I’m glad you’ve made a decision you feel good about- but I’m sad it’s not in Utah! I understand you have to do what is best for your kiddo- but what about me??
I’m so sorry you have the rounds of HFM going around your house. And poor Fuzzles!!! Hate, hate, hate that disease. Good luck with the move. And if I might make a non-poll suggestion, how about moving it to once a month - it might give folks time to participate and to gear up for it. I LOVED it, but couldn’t take the weekly commitment to either the posting or mass reading. ;-( Goofball played, too, this week, though!
I’m so sorry your kids are sick. What a bummer! Hope they get well soon.
Congrats on the move decision! I’ll bet that alleviates a tad bit of stress (although I know there is much more on the horizon)
Hope the kiddos get well soon. I’ll be thinking about you and wishing you all the best during this ..well what can only be described as crazed time in your life.
BTW, one of my best girlfriends just moved back to Seattle from Denver and she and her hubby (he was born and raised there) are now contemplating moving back. That said if she goes…I’ll definitely be out to visit and well who knows…
Oh boy! I remember when my kids all got hand foot and mouth. YUCK! My sympathy dear. Hopefully Fuzzles will feel better fast!
Congrats on the decision. If you’re going with your hearts, it’ll be the right thing.
And hand foot mouth disease? We went through that with Nicholas. But Gavin had it worse than him! Yeah, true, my husband got it from my son. Gavin was the one complaining - but he did have it worse (and it lasted longer) than Nicholas. Hope you don’t get it!
Take care, my friend!
Hey I played SOS this weekend and I left a note at Kate’s site as she requested. You’d better add me to mister Linky twice next Sunday
Well you probably didn’t expect me to play anymore after an absence of 3 months. I don’t have much inspiration for big love stories, but had some travel adventures in mind. Maybe not 100% suitable for SOS, don’t know. I can also post them without the SOS label.
I think Jenn’s suggestion to reduce the frequency could be a valid one.
Congratulations about the move to Denver! Great that you can live nearer to some relatives. How’s the health care for autism in Colorado?
I hope that vicious bug leaves your house quickly! Poor children. Give them a big hug (but keep your mouth covered
).
Gah! Sorry about the yuckiness! So, so glad you’ve got some sort of certainty ahead of you. Knowing where you’re supposed to be is an awesome, awesome feeling, especially after being uncertain for so long. I’m really excited for you. If a little annoyed that you’re moving before I come down to visit this summer.
Hmph.
Still love you.
Now I’m off to find more blogs by Denver-ites so I’ll have more reason to visit there some day!
wowzers…I get sick and I feel like I have missed so much.
Hope the kiddies feel better soon…I had an awful time getting rid of that disease with my gremlins…they kept giving it back and forth to each other.
As far as SOS goes, I really hope you hang in there…I absolutely LOVE all your stories …you are such a gifted writer and I would miss them.
I haven’t been playing because I have been too sick to blog at all…but I am on the mend and I seriously don’t mind hosting anytime you need a hand…feel free to comment or email me anytime you need a host or if there is anything I can do to help out.
You know, I think you’ve had your fair share of CRAP lately. It’s time someone else has a turn. Hope you get some sleep soon.
I have an SOS post ready to go (but not the one I told you about…) so if you’re still doing it, I’m in (but you might have to remind me, because I am a big airhead).
Also, we thought da Boo had that, too. Turned out to be a strep infection in her fingers! Never heard of that one before! Who says my kids aren’t talented, eh?
Utah’s gonna be missing out but Colorado’s in luck! As for SOS, I say you at least have to finish the story you started but never finished
Just stumbled over here, working a night shift, don’t know what I would have done to stay awake if not for all the SOSs LOVE them. I have to think up something good, true or not. Hmmmm…….
But I love your blog.
Cheers-Al
Well, HELLO Denver and new adventures! How very exciting. Though I do commiserate with you over the whole moving thing. Can’t wait to hear more and more about it and all the good that will come of it. Congratulations to all.
Sorry about the sickies at your house too. Sucks that sickness and I hope the course that it runs is set at super speed and you can be finished fast.
Much lovey love and good wishes coming from me to you!
Hi sweetie. Congrats on the decision, it must be kind of a relief. And hand foot and mouth can be awful. Miss E had it just after she turned four and was so ill. Miss M had it last year and it wasn’t too bad. They’re all different. Hope they all get better soon and big hugs to Fuzzles. It can be so nasty.
