Super Tuesday!!!!!

Published by Brillig at 12:02 pm under Blogginess

I’m such a nerd, I know. But I have been COUNTING DOWN to Super Tuesday!!!!

Because I don’t like to fight, I don’t talk very much about my political leanings. I mean, I make no secret about the fact that I’m rather liberal, but I don’t usually get into the juicy details of why and what. But today, I must make a special exception! Because it’s SUPER TUESDAY!!!!

Let me start off by telling you that I’m a teeny tiny blue dot in an excessively red state. Not just a red state, but a Mitten state (that’s a state full of people who are smitten with Mitt). Let’s face it. I’m a democrat in Utah. I’m the only person I know who’s NOT going to be voting for Romney.

In Utah, you have to be a registered republican in order to vote in the primary, so I obviously WON’T be voting in the Republican primary. Hahaha. But, if someone held a gun to my head and FORCED me to vote for a republican, it would be McCain.

I know, get over your gasping. I’m not saying that I want McCain to be president, but between the two of the Republicans that people are actually talking about, he’s the one I’d pick if I had to pick one. Why? Three reasons: torture, wire-tapping, and pork barrel politics. These are three things that McCain has spoken out against, and I respect him tremendously for it. In Utah, you are UNAMERICAN and UNPATRIOTIC and even a TERRORIST if you don’t agree with every single word that falls out of Mr. Bush’s mouth. Hahaha. They’re the ones supporting torture and illegal detention and wiretapping, and I’M the terrorist. Um…. Anyway, Mr. McCain has a teeny tiny spark of sanity, reason, and intellect that I do not see elsewhere in his party.

FORTUNATELY, no one, yet, has put a gun to my head and forced me to vote for a Republican. (Though, believe me, there are PLENTY of guns around– I live in a place where the only part of the constitution anyone actually holds dear is the second ammendment…) PHEWWWW!

I had lunch with some of my bloggy friends the other day. More about that later. But I bring it up now to tell you about a bet I made with Candace Salima (yes, you heard me. Two mormons were betting) about Mr. Romney. I was clearly betting with a Mitten, who believes firmly that Mr. Romney is our next Commander in Chief. I am of the humble opinion that the man is utterly un-electable. So, we made a bet. Here we are shaking hands:

shakingonit.jpg

So, point is, if Romney becomes our next president, I owe her lunch. If not, she owes me lunch. I’d say I’m sitting in a pretty good position… Plus, if Romney became president, owing Candace lunch would be the LEAST of my worries (as I frantically pack my bags for Canada…).

So, how exactly will I be voting today? Well? hahahaha. Most of you know me pretty well by now. This will be a fun game. You have to GUESS which democrat I’ll be voting for in the primary today… Go on, guess!

Opinion Polls & Market Research

And, because I’m curious like that, I want to know who you, my gorgeous and adorable readers, will be voting for (or already voted for, or would vote for if you were an American, or whatever). By the way, these are totally anonymous. I have no way of knowing how you voted on how you will vote. :-D

Opinion Polls & Market Research

Ahhh, won’t this be fun?

Regardless of how I vote or how I don’t vote, my expectations are that the nominees will turn out to be McCain vs. Clinton. That’s how I see this thing going down once the primaries are over. And then I expect Clinton to win the big election and be our next president. That’s the future according to Brillig. What do you think?

I know who YOU are voting for and have no idea who IIII am voting for. :D Also, I can’t vote today. Because I’m apparently stupid for registering as an independent.

    Stupid Arizona.

  3. Smiling Momon 05 Feb 2008 at 12:35 pm

Oh, I did the same thing Kate! I am an independent voter too, and I am an absentee voter. I mailed in my absentee ballot before I realized that in CA I am able to bring that ballot into the voting center and switch it for a Democrat ballot. Shoot, shoot, shoot!!

What an exciting election year! If I were to have actually voted correctly, it would have been for Obama!

  4. Tristi Pinkstonon 05 Feb 2008 at 1:04 pm

If Clinton wins, I’ll be the one heading for Canada. She has stated that she believes the government should have a bigger hand in raising children, and the things she’s said sound remarkably to me like the plot of Lois Lowry’s “The Giver.” I will never turn my children over to the government to raise and if it really does come to that, I’m so out of here.

That said, if Romney does win, Brillig, I don’t think it would be too hard for you to stick around. He might not do things the way you’d like, but I don’t think he’d do anything too extremely dreadful.

McCain scares me. I have a lot of respect for what he went through as a POW, but the man has a temper and he can’t control it.

  5. Jen in MIon 05 Feb 2008 at 1:04 pm

I loved those voting gizmos on your site! What fun! Being from Michigan, my primary vote didn’t. even. count.

    UGH!

    Happy voting!

  6. Lilacspecson 05 Feb 2008 at 1:05 pm

I’m voting via absentee ballot. I’m a registered Democrat and I think McCain is scary and Romney is not going to win anywhere but Utah and maybe Massachusetts (it’s sad that I’m not sure if I misspelled that).

While I think both Democratic candidates have the potential to do great things (I was all for Edwards so his leaving threw me a bit), I’m going to have to go with Clinton I think.

  7. Annieon 05 Feb 2008 at 1:10 pm

I think I love you even more Brillig!

I can’t vote - not eligible for citizenship until later this year.

I have a very personal bias towards Clinton since she, personally, did so many good things for Northern Ireland, in addition to those she was on board with with her husband. I figure if she can act with such caring and passion for the betterment of a foreign country - that passion and determination to forge ahead with solutions and results could only be stronger in her own country.

  8. Shellieon 05 Feb 2008 at 1:32 pm

I am worse than a Democrat in Utah, I’m a fence sitter. I don’t belong in any camp. I don’t see anything in black and white, just shades of gray. I can’t stand politicians because I can’t trust them, so I don’t want to vote for any of them. Anarchy anyone? I’m only sure that the worst possible scenario is Huckabee. He would be truly terrible. DON’T vote for Huckabee. Other than that, it’s a wash up. As long as whoever gets in gets good support for their good ideas and no support for the bad ones and can assemble a decent cabinet, we probably won’t do any worse than we have in the past. We can all stay. And try to figure out how to stop all the junk going on in politics before the next elections roll around.

  9. Amber @ Soggy Cheerioson 05 Feb 2008 at 1:41 pm

You’re not the only one in Utah not voting for Romney. I registered as a dem just to vote in the primary (since I figured that Mitt had the Rep vote here sewn up). I consider myself an independent though. Obama is my man.

  10. Annetteon 05 Feb 2008 at 1:50 pm

I think we’ll end up with McCain on the ballot, but I can’t figure out if Hillary or Obama will snag the democratic ballot. That’ll be a close call. I can’t see a republican in the White House this time around. Bush’s missteps aside, historically we’ve flipped parties after 8 years of one.

Are ya gonna tell us which democrat YOU voted for?

  11. Butrfly Gardenon 05 Feb 2008 at 2:06 pm

((Ooh, pretty colors! Did you change or is my monitor screwy?))

First off, let me just say that I’m not voting today. I don’t know if I’m registered to a certain party or what - this is all so new and confusing to me.

I was really considering voting for Edwards. I’m usually a little more Right sided, but I really liked a lot of his plans. My hope was that after Hilary won the dem nod, he would run as an Independent. I’m sad he dropped out.

I also (here to show my lack of political knowledge) thought that McCain was a real conservative guy, so I was upset about that when he started getting the lead. In my defense, I thought it was kind of a joke that he was running anyway and didn’t pay him any attention. Good Lord, the man is as old as my grandpa! That’s getting up there!! Haha, when I actually started paying attention to him, I started liking him a little more. He’ll probably get my vote. I know I’ll catch flack for this, but I just. can’t. stand. Hilary. Also, McCain is almost for sure going to take my governer as a running mate and I heart my governer. (Although, that would mean we’d get a new one! Shoot!)

As you can see, I do NOT have a strong stance in this topic.

BTW, did you ever read Kellyology’s post about this?

  12. Rhondaon 05 Feb 2008 at 3:02 pm

Brilling- I LOVE you….if I ever end up back in Utah, we can have Democratic parties together! I’m voting for Clinton for reasons that have been and will be argued with, but it is what it is. I also think that Clinton will be the next president.

That said- I think Romney would actually do a great job as president; he has the best chance of running the country well, but the least chance or getting elected. His Republicanness aside, I think he’d make a great president.

  13. Goofballon 05 Feb 2008 at 3:15 pm

aaah finally a spot where a foreigner can vote ;). Yoohoo I particpated a little bit in the American primaries.

  14. Kellyologyon 05 Feb 2008 at 3:44 pm

    You are so getting lunch!

Lo-ove your surveys! And per the bloggy world my predictions are coming true…so far! Though I was a little confused about who to vote for in the Democratic primary. I really love Hillary. I think as a woman she completely rocks! But there are sooooo many people out there that hate her and could never get past it no matter what loser is running against her. So, I voted for the only person left that I thought could bring over some of the moderate republicans. For once, I voted politically.

OH…and I’m in another ultra-conservative state as well. When I went to my polling place today the Republican sign in book was at least 50 pages long and the Democrat one was 6. I asked. Needless to say, I completely feel your pain.

  15. Luisaon 05 Feb 2008 at 3:48 pm

McCain? I have two words for you: Manchurian. Candidate.

Don’t get me started on the Mittster.

I believe you will vote/have voted for Hillary Clinton, because you share my opinion that, as smart and interesting as Obama is, he doesn’t have what it takes to deal effectively with Congress. He’s just too young and inexperienced. I think the first time he set foot on Capitol Hill, Congress would beat him up and take his lunch money. He strikes me as a bully magnet.

The press loves Obama because they want to pretend he’s MLK, Jr., which to my mind is the worst kind of racism. But he’s not MLK.

Hillary’s my gal. Always has been, always will be. I worked on Bill’s campaigns as well as Hillary’s. Plus, my pal RFK, Jr. endorsed her, as if I needed any more reason.

I foresee many of my regular readers seeing this opinion and never visiting me again….

  16. Nellon 05 Feb 2008 at 3:59 pm

Hmm, this is fun. I’m for Obama, but your election prediction sounds right on. Also, I think Utah will probably be the only state in which Romney wins because I’m over here in Massachusetts and we didn’t really like him as Governor and don’t want him as president. He spent the entire time he was in office here trying to convince the state that he wasn’t too conservative and now that he’s gone national he’s spent all his time trying to convince everyone else that he’s not too liberal. Blech.

Hillary kind of freaks me out. She’s got everything a little too well planned for my liking, too much the politician, but if that was a reason not to vote for someone, I’d never vote at all! I miss Kucinich.

  17. Kristaon 05 Feb 2008 at 4:40 pm

I was so frustrated when John Edwards dropped out. I so would have voted for him and I’m normally a republican. Now I just don’t know who to vote for. Maybe Obama if he doesn’t sell out. Hillary just scares the pants off me. Have you seen her health care initiative? Sure, all Americans having health care sounds like a great idea, but if you don’t have it you get fined like $1500 bucks? Because she’s not planning to have the government sponsor it, she’s simply going to require that everyone have it. Who’s that going to hurt? The exact same people who are hurting now. Grrr. She’s just shady and I don’t trust her at all.
As for Republicans, I guess if I had to vote against Hillary, McCain might be the least bad of the alternatives. Personally I kind of liked Guiliani… ;) Anyone who can turn New York around probably could do the same with the country!
And I agree, we’re probably going to end up with a Dem in the white house do to the fact that a LOT of Republicans and/or fence sitters will slant Dem after the last 8 years…

  18. A-Bugon 05 Feb 2008 at 5:21 pm

Well, I think that you should start picking out lunch spots…you are sure to win on that front.(unless I am more out of touch with this country than I think I am!)

You are surrounded by Bush supporters?! I didn’t think that there were any of those left! :)

I am with you about not often sharing my politics…I am not the fighting kind.

Here’s to a successful super Tuesday!

  19. Kimberlyon 05 Feb 2008 at 7:14 pm

On behalf of Canada I’d like to say that you’re more than welcome to join us.

  20. TheBakersRockon 05 Feb 2008 at 10:30 pm

Honestly, I’m glad you posted this. I was hoping you wouldn’t hold back. Honestly, I don’t really like any of the candidates and it’s like choosing between the fast, extremely fast, slow and torturous, or expressway road to America Hell in a Handbasket. I have a pretty pessimistic view of it all, and think the only real way to bring this country back is to start from scratch and the means to getting there are not pleasant. Sooo, with that said, may the best man win…Hehhehe…

  21. billybobon 05 Feb 2008 at 10:36 pm

    you are a great American!

  22. TheBakersRockon 05 Feb 2008 at 10:55 pm

Me? I know right? I think we live in the most amazing country on the planet…don’t get me wrong…but the corruption runs deep and the very foundations of this country have been lost…that old great Document called the Constitution has someone been relegated to having the importance of a cool relic on display at some museum in D.C. Show me a candidate who wants to get back to the Constitution, to fight for it and uphold it and I’ll vote for that person and my hope in this country will be restored.

  23. TheBakersRockon 05 Feb 2008 at 10:56 pm

That word someone in that Constitution sentence shouldn’t be there…sorry…hahah…

  24. shuey6on 05 Feb 2008 at 11:50 pm

I had a super Tuesday open forum all day on my blog… the first poster wrote about abortion and it ruined the whole thing. No one else ever moved on to other topics! Hello…

Anyway, I am a BIG Hillary fan, altho Obama seems pleasant enough. My dream ticket is Clinton/Obama.

  25. Nanetteon 06 Feb 2008 at 2:09 am

I think you are a very wise woman in a state that trains people to be sheep. :)

I voted too! So now you know another non-republican voter in Utah that thinks Mittens is not going to be elected. You will win the lunch or I will buy you lunch, ha!

  26. soccer mom in denialon 06 Feb 2008 at 8:32 am

After all the nonsense Willard Mitt has said about Massachusetts I’m embarrassed that the Republicans voted for him.

I have a site for your friend:

    http://romneyisafraud.blogspot.com/

A detailed accounting of all his st*pid antics while Governor.

  27. Yvetteon 06 Feb 2008 at 9:36 am

So, I live in Texas and our primary is March 4th and I am so excited that our vote may actually mean something this year! I love the fact that I am having a hard time choosing a candidate because I like them both so much (Clinton or Obama), so I will be taking this next month to really listen to each of the candidates. And I agree with you, If I had a gun pointed to my head and I had to vote for a Republican, it would be John McCain for the same reasons you posted.

  28. Bryanon 06 Feb 2008 at 12:07 pm

Well you’ve generated some controvery! Politics and religion will usually do the trick. It’s like pulling out a lightsaber at a Trekkie convention.

On the Democratic side, I figure both candidates to be pragmatic. Having seen Bill Clinton in office who, notwithstanding his many failings, did not cause the Republic to fall, I’m comfortable that either Democrat would do a credible job. My gut tells me to go with Obama, because he seems more honest to me. And I’d rather have an honest person in office with whom I disagree on some points of policy, than a dishonest one who I agree more closely with.

That said, I tend to side Republican. I favor Romney (though while I was living in DC I scoffed at some of the people there who thought had any shot at all–how could a Mormon be president, I thought?), mainly based on his gubernatorial record, he gets actual results, and because he’s clearly smarter than the rest of the field. And again, he comes off as more honest to me.

McCain WAS my second choice, and previously I’d said that I would be willing to hold my nose and vote for McCain over the Democratic candidates. Being POW didn’t really do it for me, as far as electing a president goes, but I appreciate his approach to pork, and carry some apprehensions about the abuse potential with wiretapping. I wasn’t so impressed with his supposed stand on torture vis-a-vis Romney. I agree with McCain that as a moral matter it should not be done–but so did Romney. Romney just didn’t want to show everyone our play book, which I felt was the smarter move. A little stragem is a good thing.

But then I watched how McCain acted when Romney dared to bring up his sketchy record. He really blew up and then resorted to name-calling, unsubstantiated character attacks, and then finally lying. And that finally did it for me. I’m voting Obama over McCain. I’ll think about Clinton.

Having said that, I really feel like it’s lame to side with a party and stick to it (I’ve had to repent), come what may. It’s tempting living in a state that’s strongly Republican (like say…Utah), or more Democrat (like in CA where I’m at), to want to run the other way just snub everyone else. But an actual look at politicians’ records reveals that they tend to cut along lines that are not predictable based on party. A Democrat might be more “Republican” and vice versa. Not all Republicans are demons, and not all Democrats are retarded, although most independents are retarded demons.

Education is the most important part of a successful liberal democracy like ours. And yet, of late, it seems to be more and more lacking. The effort is just too much, evidently. Name recognition and cute sound bites are the order of the day. When the dust settles, we’ll have traded wise leadership for convenience and entertainment, and liberty for for a false sense of security.

  29. moodswingingmommyon 06 Feb 2008 at 1:46 pm

Thank you for giving another foreigner the opportunity to vote. I am even more frustrated since I specifically TOLD my Dem DH who to vote for and he didn’t vote the right way! LOL!

I am most curious who you are leaning towards. Will we ever find out?

Your friend the Mitten is going to be most disappointed come November!

  30. TheBakersRockon 06 Feb 2008 at 1:55 pm

    Well said Bryan…

  31. Bryanon 06 Feb 2008 at 3:37 pm

Word. [Yes, I said ‘word.’ Word.]

Lightsabers at a Trekkie convention, baby!

  32. Kateon 06 Feb 2008 at 3:48 pm

Oh geez, people always ask me who I’m going to vote for, but I honestly have no idea. I adore Obama, but he’s rather young and inexperienced. Hillary would never get elected, though I still don’t have a clear idea about why people hate her so virulently. On the Republican side, McCain would be my front runner, but his temper does concern me. Romney… well, he rubs me the wrong way. And it would be a freezing day in hell when I vote for Huckabee.

The last presidential election was so easy– it was pretty much anybody but Bush. I would have voted for a cactus over Bush. All I can say is that this is going to be a very interesting election year.

    Great post, by the way!

    K.

  33. Worker Mommyon 06 Feb 2008 at 5:02 pm

This post is but one illustration of why I continue to love you ;) I’ll be honest that I’m not sure whom you’ll vote for but of course I took a guess. I’m an Obama supporter. I think he’s a fascinating man, ready to bring about change. His inexperience concerns me a tad bit but I believe he’ll do his best to make good on his promises.

  34. Leendaluuon 06 Feb 2008 at 8:08 pm

I am finding all this talk on blogs interesting….the American election process baffles me…but still is interesting…

    Happy Super Tuesday

  36. Tonyaon 06 Feb 2008 at 9:36 pm

I would be the one running for the hills if “Billary” is elected. Besides her having completely opposite views than I do about most things, everytime I see her on T.V. I hear the music from the Wizard of Oz when the wicked witch goes flying by the window of the house in the tornado.

The person I wanted has dropped out and being in Oregon I apparently don’t really count as my primary is way to late in the game to matter..

If I had to choose today it would be Obama mostly because he is inexperienced and because The Clinton and Bush families have had the white house for far to long.

  37. Tirzahon 07 Feb 2008 at 8:02 am

For some strange reason I registered as a Republican and so I HAD to vote in their primary if I wanted to vote at all! I was really annoyed!

  38. Yvetteon 07 Feb 2008 at 12:08 pm

Well, it looks like you win the bet! Wow, that was easy.

  39. Candace Salimaon 07 Feb 2008 at 12:29 pm

Never thought he’d withdraw, although his reason was compelling. You win. You thought you were scared about Mitt Romney. Batten down the hatches, hell, in the form of liberals and jihadists, is about to be unleashed upon this nation.

  40. Bryanon 07 Feb 2008 at 3:29 pm

Our history has been one of constant struggle. Our finest hours have generally been our darkest. So, if you’re right Candace, then we’ll have to pull up by our boot straps and adapt, and remain relentlessly optimistic in the face of extraordinary opposition, like the patriots of yesteryear.

And on the other hand, if things are less dramatic than they appear, the status quo continues (which is a mixed bag, I’ll warrant). Regardless, I’m of the opinion that things are more carefully watched over than we can imagine. There are millions of good people in this country, and as long there are some of us, we’ll make it work. Come hell or highwater. Note that you’re insurance probably only covers highwater.

  41. Emmasometimeson 07 Feb 2008 at 9:07 pm

So many have dropped out…just makes voting easier to have fewer and fewer candidates. But reallY? If it’s John McCain on the Republican ticket, good lord, it might as well all be Dems running…

I personally like the Republican conservative values and Democratic spending and programs but I can’t have both, dang it. ;)

I’m very pro-life so that really swings my vote.

I think you are voting for Obama. Easy pleasey, lemon squeezy.

  42. Marie Greenon 07 Feb 2008 at 10:59 pm

I voted for Obama. I’ll vote for Clinton, if she gets the nomination. I like her, and the main reason I didn’t vote for her is b/c I think she’s very polarizing. So many people hate her. Obama doesn’t seem to have any intense HATERS, and I’m ready for some unity.

I WISH people didn’t hate her so much. Like I said, I’ll vote for her in the general election.

  43. cherannon 07 Feb 2008 at 11:01 pm

Obama Rules! I guess your friend owes you lunch seeing as how Romney dropped out today. So make sure you order yourself the most expensive thing on the menu.

So who did you vote for?

  46. hollyon 12 Feb 2008 at 3:52 am

i am absolutely horrified that utah supports bush. horrified. you see now i don’t feel so bad that i left the church. moving on.

wish i’d read this before romney dropped out. that would have made it (the drop-out) more amazing.

i want you to be right about the hillary-mccain thing, but i see a LOT of mamas-for-obama out there. so please be right. for me. please.

btw, it’s very confusing to be blue *AND* red. (democrats are red in britain). much more confusing than the driving thing, which i mastered really quickly.
