My dearest co-founder, Kate of Walking Kateastrophe, is hosting Soap Opera Sunday this week. Be sure to head on over there for the list of other SOS participants!

(More Adam—Part one, part two.)
Tara and I began hanging out on a regular basis, and I therefore ran into her brother often. Every time I saw him, it was as though electricity was surging through me.

Neither Adam nor I were what you’d call “shy.” We were both flirtatious, overly-confident, and well-versed in the art of playing. Neither one of us was looking for a relationship. In fact, if memory serves, I was already in a relationship with someone else… (Y’all remember Chad, right? Epic proportions of unhealthiness…)

I became infatuated with the idea of conquest. I HAD to make this boy, who I had adored so obsessively once upon a time, adore me.

And I found, from the way he kept manipulating situations to be near me, that I was in the drivers seat. He did seem to adore me. I was winning. It was such a thrill!

I never talked about this Adam-game I was playing with any of the other girls. I wasn’t quite sure how to talk about it with Tara, after all. And Ginny and Monica were clearly pining for him. So it had to be my little secret, I decided.

One night, Tara invited me, along with Monica and Ginny (who were now living with her and Adam in their parents’ house) and Sara to watch the MTV Movie Awards at their place and then just spend the night. Perfect.

Adam would be away that evening, but somehow I knew he’d find a way to make an appearance… This crazy magnetic pull was affecting both of us and I knew he’d be there.

We girls filled their family room with blankets and pillows and snacks and settled in for the long haul, just like a slumber party right out of Jr. High School, except that we were all in college…

A few hours into our slumber party, Adam appeared. Hahaha. Shocker. I knew he would come home. He boldly marched towards me, lifted the side of the blanket that I was snuggled under, and made room for himself there. I’m sure the other girls were arching their eyebrows about this, but I wasn’t paying any attention to them. I was completely focused on this gorgeous grinning boy… whose legs were resting against mine, whose heart was pounding as frantically as mine, and whose lips were close enough to…

(to be continued…)

Kind of like a drug–have to wait for the next “fix” and it’s definitely hard to wait! We may have to have a mid-week “fix” for these SOS cliffhangers.

You are (or were) a strange bag of paradoxes. I suppose most people are, and yours are simply more exposed to us now (at least as it relates to this). It’s interesting how excellent intentions and extreme vanity can coexist. You were like a rose with razor sharp, three-foot long, poison tipped, electrified, white-hot thorns.

I don’t remember Adam. I wouldn’t know him from…Adam. But I quail for him now (in that retrospective, nigh unto fictional sense). And I don’t quail often, I’ll have you know.

Ladies and Gentleman, the above comment is a fine example of what happens when an ex-boyfriend finds your blog. Hahahahahaha. Not sure if I should be flattered or insulted, Bryan. Either way, I’m dying here. Too funny.

  18. Bryanon 21 Jan 2008 at 6:18 pm

    Brillig,

How did I know I’d get it for writing that? I’ve been disclaimed. Denounced. Outed. Yes, I am an ex-boyfriend. But I kind of feel that special pride of a soldier with a Purple Heart or a former POW. I lived!!!

As for your implied question: flattered I think is the better choice. In your posts you spotlight your life’s dramas, the conquests, but also (and it seems to me you take great pains, and not wasted ones) to spot light the role your follies play in them. It makes it fun. It humanizes the character (so to speak). But, in an even more interesting way, it underhandedly instructs us. We’re both in awe of your prowess and shocked (and tsking a little) at some of your choices. But that’s the point, right? We all make mistakes, but yours are so much more…well, captivating. And we reflect.

It’s like watching Achilles thrash and dismember Hector. We generally cheer for Hector, but we can only applaud the skill of Achilles. But you get the added benefit of being the Homer also and in making us feel good with a happy ending we all know is there. “I’m not sure how it happened, but this girl became a woman somewhere along the way, married a great guy, had wonderful children, and now seems rather wiser than her years would generally make her.” I’m paraphrasing, but this–I think–is what many people are saying, here in distilled form.

Never be distressed by anything I might comment here. For Pete’s sake. If–hypothetically–I had ever said anything mean to you (and this is TOTALLY hypothetical, right?), it’s all been said and the feelings that would have theoretically and hypothetically prompted them would have LONG dissipated. And indeed, whatever my opinions of you were at this now distant hypothetical point in time, I assure you I now have only respect, admiration, and high esteem for you.

I’m just another satisfied reader who, conscious of the motivations of bloggers, thought to make some meaningful comment to the blogger. Yes, ex-boyfriend. But I’m happy to remain consigned with the rest of the faceless subscribing horde, unless dismissed. I’ll try and be less controversial.

  19. Nickion 21 Jan 2008 at 11:44 pm

Oh my, this gets more and more interesting all the time! I think maybe you could start a blog for all of your ex-boyfriends and let them tell stories…that could be very fun! ;)

Loved this Brill. And Bryan sounds like a wise man indeed. Hee hee. It’s never dull over here.

KISS! The word you are looking for is KISS!

Dang. do I need to edit you every Sunday? That was a big typo….

By the way, Bryan up there writes divinely. Obviously a wicked smart guy. Funny too.

  23. Fourier.analyston 23 Jan 2008 at 1:54 pm

Oh dear Brilling, you do know how to hold and enthrall and audience!! And if Bryan is a typical example of your rejects, I can’t wait to know more about your “keeper”!

I’ll be spending more time around here soon and catching up on my reading and commenting! You are such fun my Darlin’!
