My Opera and Me
Dearest Luisa wanted to know about me and opera, opera and me.
Well, there’s so much to this story. Some of you probably don’t even realize that I am passionate about opera, and have been since I was a child.
So, we’ll start there. When I was a child. It is Flashback Friday, after all.
I’m a daddy’s girl. I would do ANYTHING to be able to spend extra time hanging out with my daddy. Daddy was an opera enthusiast. He would stay up late at night to watch the Met on PBS. I thought it was disastrous cacophony. But, if it meant that I could stay up late and hang out with Daddy, then it was worth it. And somewhere in there, I got into the music and developed an interest.
Again, this was just the beginning— setting the scene so that a few years later, when I was 12, I was ready to really embrace opera. 12 was a huge HUGE year for me. HUGE! I’m still quite convinced that I was more mature as a 12-year old than I am now. But that, dear friends, will have to be discussed another day. Yup. You read that right. I’m going to drag this out. Two reasons for this: so many people are doing NaBloPoMo that no one wants to read a long post, because they’ve got a million posts to read. Secondly, I’m playing NaBloPoMo, which means that I need to stretch out my meager supply of writing material. ![]()

It is wonderful that the arts have been such an important part of your life for so long. I can tell it has had an impact on you.
Oh, yay, oh, yay! I love ANY post (even a short one) that starts with the words “Dearest Luisa.” Thanks for the linkage!
I’m very interested in hearing more. My love affair with opera didn’t begin until I was 13, so you’re ahead of me yet again.
Thank you so much for shrinkage! I am so behind. I think I’ll return the favor…
Oh, and looking forward to the next paragraph…lol;)
I’m a big fan too! Cried last night when I remembered that I was missing Renee Fleming as Violetta in La Traviata. You can now see live broadcasts of Met opera’s in movie theaters - really fun to watch/listen on the big screen. Check out http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events.aspx
Amazing! Your dad loves opera…he is the first man I know of that love it….
its usually woman…and when you see a man at the opera, its usually dragged along by the female. *wink*
I love the opera. Unfortunately, I’m the only one in my family who does, so I have to listen in secret.
I love opera too, but not Italian. I find Verdi and Puccini utterly tedious. (I know… I’m a snob.)
Ironically, my toddler loves opera, too. I can’t wait to read the rest of the story.
Opera is something I’ve never really taken the time to go see. I keep telling myself that I will but then it doesn’t happen. Maybe this year at the music hall I will finally immerse myself in culture.
I have never been to the opera but have always wanted to go. I still hope to one day.
I started really liking classical music about a year and a half ago. Liking it to the point where I wanted to LEARN about it and not just listen to it to fall asleep.
So after a year and a half of really liking it, I can recognize certain pieces or sometimes even credit a song I don’t know to a particular composer. But I still don’t like telling people that I like classial because I’m scared they’ll ask me something about it and make me look stupid. HAHAHA.
Anyway, I have found myself fond of a few opera pieces and it really makes me want to go see one. But getting the man to go to something like that would be a lost battle (a play, yes. a concert, sure! a play/concert in a language he doesn’t understand..no fricken bracken way). When you come visit me (hehehe) we’ll go to one, okay? And you can learn me all about it.
Oh, I came so late to the opera game. As in 3X as old as you were. Shame on me…
And yet another reason to respect and admire you so.
Dude, I completely understand. I’m dragging everything out into a 4 part series this month. Can’t wait to read more!
If you like opera, you’ll love listening to the YouTube on my blog. Scroll down a little way. It’s Paul Potts, the Welsh singer who won Britain’s Got Talent this year. What a fabulous voice. I ordered the CD off Amazon and it came already. Have to keep playing it. Wonderful!
I began playing violin in sixth grade–and rather got hooked on symphonies, which one thing leads to another in the music world . . .
And my goodness, now I have to wait for part two LOL–I’ll be back!
