Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
Thank you for your overwhelming response to my post about my hair and what to do with it! I read each of your comments and followed all of your links and was so grateful for the fun ideas and helpful tips you all gave me.
And so I will now show you the hair process. And because of the nature of this post, it will require pictures of me. WAY too many pictures of me. But I have two disclaimers first.
1. I was taking these pictures in the mirror and, therefore, couldn’t use the flash on my cheap and crappy camera. That means that the pics are quite dark and in an attempt to lighten them with MOPM (cuz I’m on a computer that doesn’t have anything fancier than that) they got all grainy and blotchy. So you don’t need to point out to me that the pics are dark, grainy, and blotchy. I KNOW that already. Sheesh.
2. When bloggers post pics of themselves, their readers tend to feel it their duty to exclaim that the blogger is gorgeous, whether or not they think so. So, I’m begging you, PLEADING with you, not to give in to that pressure. My posting pics of me is NOT my way of begging for compliments, so please. Don’t.
Okay. On with the show.
On Friday, as I was reading all of your comments, my hair looked like this:
Then, in the middle of reading your comments and IMing with some friends, I put my hair in a ponytail. And then… I sliced the pony tail off. With pinking sheers. Leaving my hair thus:
I sent the picture to a few friends, all of whom suggested I now attempt bangs.. As that had been part of the original plan anyway, I did. It… didn’t work.
(That last pic was taken the next day, post shower, revealing just how not-well I’d cut my hair. haha.) So, I did what I knew I’d end up doing all along—the next day I went to a cheapo haircutting place and had them fix it. The lady was super cute and super nice, and was trying very hard not to laugh too boisterously at me. She turned my mess into a modern-looking, fun haircut. However, when she got to my bangs, she did her best to fix them, and then suggested that I keep them pinned back for the next few weeks. Hahahaha. Well, I’m an obedient girl. Anyway, this is the end result:
So there it is. I’m still getting used to it, fiddling with it and figuring it out. And I love that it’s still long enough that I can pull it back into a mini-pony tail on those mornings that I have to get kiddos to school and I’m running late. Thanks for all the suggestions. You’ll notice that I actually incorporated a LOT of your ideas.
And many of you have been worried about Hubby through all of this, understandably. Fortunately, Brian is SO used to my crazy “emotional hair-cutting” (as Jenn in Holland called it) that he wasn’t phased at all. And he showered me with compliments, because he’s a doll like that.
And this, Gentle Readers, is the END of my lengthy posts about my hair. I promise!

Oh dahling! You is just gorrrregeoussss! Your eyes! Your nose! Your hair! The dimples! Oh my goodness, the dimples! I am just flabbergasted by your gorgeousness!
And the hair looks nice too. =P
I too, am blown away, BLOWN. AWAY. by your beauty. And I really really really like the new do. If you want me to come over and show you how I indeed whack at mine and thin it out (by using the side of the scissor as a razor) I would be happy to give you a tutorial.
Emotional hair cutting is what I am all about.
You, my dear, are BRILLIANTLY beautiful.
I love the bangs look! I realize it was not exactly the ideal bangs but I cannot WAIT until they grow out appropriately and we see Brillig ala Bangs!!
Maaavelous Daaahling. If only I could get my hair to that length I wouldn’t want to shave my head every morning!
It looks good! I’ve had to offer the suggestion of pinning bangs back to Sunshine before…when I used to cut her hair.
She was okay with just wearing the botched bangs down.
I know what you mean about the posting of pictures, but I have to say: Even though you’re joking, don’t be so hard on yourself. We can never get enough Brillig. And you are stunningly beautiful (Said with ZERO pressure).
I am an emotional hair cutter as well. I wonder if there’s a club for us to join. Though I don’t know if we’d meet to whack off our hair and console each other or as a means to keep away from the scissors.
I think it turned out pretty good . . . and I’m with Kate . . . can’t wait to see the bangs-Brillig!
Actually… (and this shows my lack of style since I seem to be the only one so far) I think you look great with or without the bangs. I could never get my bangs to do that so I’m sans bangs. Maybe I really do need a new style, too… see what all this emotional hair cutting has done to me!
Very nice whack job, Brillig! Not too short, not too long! I am proud of you and of us for giving you all of that hairy advice. We are smart girls.
Looks wonderful. You’re beautiful as always.
gasp! You are GORGEOUS!!!
(Sorry, I had to do that, since you begged us not to!)
No, for real…you are truly beautiful.
looks beautiful!! Love it!
well, sorry you have to keep the bangs clipped back, but they do grow out quickly. I’ll be honest though, I’m not sure why you’re dissatisfied. I think you look gorgeous.
Love it!!!
So . . . was it my bang cutting method that came to grief, or some other?
Told you it takes practice. Actually, it doesn’t look half bad to me. Your face suits bangs or no bangs.
Do I get a prize for not saying you look ——–?
Great choice! Great motivation to get my behind to the salon and hack off a few inches.
I like it, bangs or no bangs. You have loverly hair! Wish mine could be that thick and luscious!
It looks fabulous!
Brill, I have always wanted to do that, just snip off a ponytail.
I wouldn’t dare to it to myself though, just other people hee hee.
You are one brave lady.
And I agree with everyone else about the gorg***s word but I won’t type it as your head may swell and suddenly your new do will only reach the tips of your ears which, let’s face it, would not be a good look.
Girl you have some eggs cutting off that much hair! Kudos to you.
Oh and…love the new length.
Ok, well, first I have to say that I really loved your hair in the “before” shots. But now, seeing the final look, I can see that it looks so much healthier and less heavy. So way to go you! For cutting your hair! Because you done good!
And I admire your guts when weilding a scissors to your own mane. If I did that the end result would be: shaved head. Because I wouldn’t know when to stop. I’d get panicked, then decide to go to a “professional”, then realize that I couldn’t get an appointment RIGHT THIS MINUTE, then I’d cut a little more here, a little more there, until… well until I was bald.
Anyway, your new cut is really great. Love it!
I could never pull off a haircut like that because of the frizz factor. I will try not to covet the non-frizziness of your hair.
Oh you know you just cut your hair because I did!
You are a brave girl Ms. Brill! I love it, and btw, you just are beautiful, so there.
ok honestly I really do like it a lot… I did the same thing a few weeks ago because I couldn’t take my hair any more and we just didn’t even have the money for a cheapo haircut…so I went at it with my scissors…and it looks soooooo bad…
I even thought about doing bangs and chickened out…and I am glad I did..lmao.
Can I be brutally honest? You look exactly like I expected you to. Really. For Real. Except you’re missing that Giant Utah-Claw bangs situation I remember seeing in every CES broadcast ever.
Anyhow, I like your hair way better with bangs - but I would grow them out a little and soften them up - just have a light fringe instead of a heavy bang, and then have the remainder blended into the rest of your hair again. But really, I like the bangs look.
“lengthy [posts] about [long] hair”. giggle. giggle.
And that photo with the bangs? Reminded me of one of your high school photos….
It looks terrific. Coughcoughcoughyersogorgeouscough.
I’m sorry honey, but you do look gorgeous. I wish I didn’t have to say that, but I’m just honest that way.
I like the bangs, though. Why is it you don’t like them? Probably just takes some getting used to.
I cut my own hair, but I’ve been cutting people’s hair for years. It is tricky.
FAB, though! Just FAB!
I want to kiss you, in a friendly way…of course! You are amazingly beautiful!!!!! I love the cut.
Wow, what a difference! I thought the bangs looked just fine in the photo, too. You have pretty eyes, and bangs just brings them out more
You are adorable.
Love the haircut! Too bad you’re so ugleeeeeeeeeee. Poor ugly Brillig. I’m tearing up here………NOT! (WINK, wink)
I like the new do’. At least you won’t have so much shampooing to do.
I’ve been bald before (think after pregnancy and PPD), I’ve had short and doggonnit, I like my long hair, sans bangs, for once in my life.
So, is it hard for you to hear compliments? Me, too. I post pictures for the art of it, or because I’m messing around with my photo programs. But really, all you have to do is stick your tongue out between your teeth….try it! tttthhhhhhhaaaaannnnk yoooou.
Besides, now I can print them out for my blogger stalker shrine. The eyeballs looking over the Pyramids would get lost in the incense cloud….
Go, you are my idol, you SNIPPED off a ponytail, I have ALWAYS wanted to to that. Thanks for the hair evolution, love it!
you are so brave. truly!
OMG!!! you look GREAT!
ummm, now you look great… but you might want to avoid cutting your own hair in the future!
Maybe I have no fashion sense but I thought the bangs looked great. But with or without them you have a very stirking beauty.
Looks great!
I decided to have my hair cut for my birthday back in July. I am more afraid of the hair salon than a child is afraid of the dentist drill.
Total Props to you for being so brave and willing to cut your own hair. My sister cuts her own hair all the time and it turns out so lovely. I am not that brave. I am not even brave when it comes to letting professionals cut my hair. Your hair looks GREAT! By the way, not giving in to pressure just stating fact here…you are super adorable!
I just got mine cut too, though not nearly as drastically as yours.
I like your new ‘do a lot- very fresh and modern, and more than a little bit s.e.x.y.
Meow.
I love that you used pinking shears. makes sense to me- instant mini-layers!
I’m so laughing because you thought people would not say you are beautiful. Too bad girl. I’ve thought you were beautiful since I first met you. The hair cut is awesome though!
I’m laughing because I think you are so incredibly brave to just take out scissors and cut. And to try an incorporate everyone’s ideas : ) So great! And I think it turned out very pretty!
You look marvelous darling!
You have fantastic eyes and great hair. The new look makes you look like you’re 19. I’m so very jealous! (*Crossing her fingers and hoping that you’re at least 25 so that is received as a compliment.*)
I am soooo jealous of your hair. Dark, thick, gorgeous hair! I have wispy hair that is awful. Plus, I think you did a great job. (And you are gorgeous, woman!)
Ok, I’m not going to comment on your beautiful looks, although I’m thrilled you posted a picture! I love to know what you ladies I read look like so I can make a picture in my head as I read your blog.
Sorry, but I can’t help the way my brain works!! By the way, having hair shorter and framing your face really does wonders for you. You are so brave! I am truly in awe!!
I know the time span for these pictures is about 1 to 2 days, but they’re so different that they could be a collage of your past:
Brillig and her look through the years . . .
This is so completely adorable!! You look mahvelous!
You’re so daring to cut your own hair! Wow! I desperately need mine cut and can’t wait for my appt. tomorrow. Your new do looks good!
Looks very good!
And I totally get the emotional long hair posts. I have a tendency to do them myself.
i love it!
i remember trying to cut my own bangs in high school…it was no good. they were way too short, and it looked so awful…i wanted to hide in my locker until they grew out!
I really like it…been thinking about doing something similar but I keep chickening out…my hair sucks no matter what I do..lol.
Girl, you got BALLS, excuse the French. I could never do that. But it turned out great, so good for you! Way to live on the edge.
ha ha, I was just reading through your crazy hair cutting posts. I too have the problem with my hair clogging up everything.
Your new ‘do’ looks pretty cool (and I’m not just saying that cause I’m scared to write what I really think). It is amazing how different a haircut can make our faces look isn’t it? in the most recent picture your face looks younger and thinner (not that it looked old and fat before— you know what I mean). Think I might have to convince The Farmer to give me some money for a new ‘do’, I too want to look younger and thinner!
Reading this post was very hard for me, you know. First I kept being distracted by the pictures, thinking “she’s so cute!” and then reminding myself not to say that in the comments. Second I kept staring at the scissors a mere foot away from the computer, because I think an emotional haircut is EXACTLY what I need right now.
Oh, BTW, I like your haircut.
Brillig=Hot!
It looks great! I recently chopped my hair too, although not by myself. If I had done it myself, I would have no hair left.
I like the bangs. Nothing wrong them. However, they are cute pinned back too. Wear those bangs with pride b/c I think you did a good job.
You look just great. Love the shorter hair.
