Get the Hair out of Here!

Published by Brillig at 12:49 am under Blogginess

So, I have a lot of hair.

I have a lot of black hair.

I have a lot of long, stringy, damaged black hair.

Every time I vacuum (you know, every decade or so) the vacuum gets clogged with my long black hair.

All of the drains in the house are clogged with my black hair.

The hair needs to go.

So, here’s me and my hair:

withacamerainmyface1.JPG

Anyway, see how my hair just hangs there? Limp? Lifeless? Style-less? You see where I’m going with this, right? For the sake of my sanity (and perhaps my marriage—I can’t tell you how NOT fond of clogged drains and vacuums my hubby is) I need you to style my hair. Cut it. Remove it from hence. Tell me WHAT to do with it. Here are the things you need to remember:

1. It has to be EASY. You KNOW that my days are crazy and spending time on my hair is not really an option most of the time.

2. I can’t go somewhere expensive to get this done. We’re talking my bathroom sink with my scrapbooking scissors (Ha! Like I scrapbook! But I DO have some fun scissors) and when that goes badly, a quick trip to SuperCuts or somewhere equally glamorous to even it up.

3. I have a fat face. It’s fat. All of me is fat. My face is no exception. Some haircuts do not exactly flatter a fat face. I need a fat-face-flattering look.

4. Help!

    hi B:
beautiful hair. i love that new eye profile pic of you that you have been using on the buzz this week. awesome shot. and BTW, i am the big yellow dot over your map of alaska. unless you also have more readers from alaska. i have had fun opening up a buzz account this week. thanks for making me feel welcome to that world, too.

    happy friday, kathleen :)

Thanks, SGTBM! Oddly enough, I do actually have a few readers in Alaska–isn’t that random?

Came over from WalksFar’s place because I spotted your blog name and you might have slithy toves here.

You have beautiful hair! But, knowing how those long annoying hairs get everywhere (my Teen recently cut his curly locks) I would suggest an asymmetrical bob — I will try to find a photo online that I could show you.

    ——————-
Thanks, Lattegirl! And you’re right—if you’re looking for slithy toves, this is the place to find them. :-D

You could keep length but have long-ish bangs (she said, envying the hell outta that long black hair) Check out this site for ideas.

    Awesome. I really dig it!

Found a series of articles about hairstyles for those of us with round faces . . . your hair looks fairly straight, so you probably can get away with more than I can. Good luck! You’ll have to post an after pic of the hair! :)

Ooooh, great list! I’ll definitely go through these. Thanks, Kate!

  6. Kateastropheon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:09 am

OK i’m looking through some of the pictures in that top ten thing and i told you so. Go with that Elisha Cuthbert look I sent over it will be so hot! Side swept bangs and a cute bob that can be worn messy or straight.

    I’m so not even joking!

    ——————
I’m very tempted by this one—and I could probably do it myself with my scrapbooking scissors (pick yourself up off the floor, kateastrophe. It’s not the end of the world). It would be all uneven and choppy and considered High Style. hahaha.

  7. Dedeeon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:20 am

I love your hair, but I understand the need to get rid of it, since I just chopped mine and all. Good luck! (P.S. I loved your day in the life of…)

    ———–
Thanks, Dedee. I didn’t know you’d just chopped all your hair off! Undoubtedly there are pics of your gorgeous self…. I WILL hunt them down. :-D

I remember seeing your beautiful hair at the blogging babes luncheon, but I don’t remember a fat face or a fat rest of you - THAT part must be your imagination. Can’t help you with the hair - I’m with the comments above that think your hair is great, but understand the feeling or being smothered the hair and the shedding. Good luck - can’t wait to see what you decide to do with it.

    ——————
You’re too sweet—and you weren’t looking very closely. :-D Thanks!

  9. Anne Bradshawon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:33 am

What a shame it has to go. I remember the feeling though. had long hair until our first babe was old enough to pull it. Painful. If you do end up with bangs, be sure to visit my blog and scroll down a bit to the post on cutting your own. Saves a bunch on in between visits to the salon.

    —————–
My hair has been pulled so much that I almost don’t feel it anymore. It’s when the baby walks away with handfuls of my hair that I get concerned. :-D And I’m all over that post of yours. I do love self-snipping, I confess. It’s my vice.

  10. Marie Greenon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:36 am

I’m pretty much in the same boat. I find that long hair is easier to deal with than short hair- it can be easily pulled up in a cute up-do that requires NOTHING other than a rubber band. Whenever I have shorter hair, it actually needs to be styled or I look RIDICULOUS.

Maybe get a good healthy cut with a few long layers around your face? If you loose a few inches from the damaged ends and get the rest jazzed up with a fresh cut, you’ll be able to keep most of your length and yet not feel “stringy”.

(From the photo, your hair acutally looks thick and healthy and great.)

  11. Myaon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:47 am

    Hi there
I’ve just popped in via Buzz too. I cut my own hair, (and it looks like it!) so, I’m probably not the best person to ask. It looks like very pretty hair to me - seems a shame to get rid. Why not tell hubby that if you keep it long, you’ll knit him a nice cosy jumper out of the hairs that fall out? What man could resist such a romantic gesture? Or cut it yourself. If disaster strikes, it’s off to the milliners toute suite!

    Mya x

  12. Jenna Consoloon 12 Oct 2007 at 9:24 am

I feel your pain. I, too, have long black hair that clogs every drain and fills the vacuum canister, and gets stuck between the baby’s toes. But I’m not ready to part with it, and it is healthy and shiny so far… But I’ve had really short cuts too, and though I don’t think you have a “fat face”, those short cuts that come to the chin and then angle up in the back with it all razored look darling. Do you know what I’m talking about? They are flattering to any face, I think, if you’re willing to go that short.

  13. Summeron 12 Oct 2007 at 9:32 am

Honestly, your hair looks thick and beautiful to me. If you decide to chop lots of it off, maybe think about donating it Lock of Love. I always grow my hair out and then chop and donate it.
Whenever I get it chopped I then ask for one layer. It’s simple and the longer layer naturally flips up when it dries.

I didn’t read the other stuff yet. I just know that almost everyone looks best with shoulder length hair that is cut around your face. When your hair frames your face, it makes it look thinner. So I think you should cut your hair like mine!

Of course, my hair is very straight. I let it dry, or blow dry it, then throw in some hot rollers (honest to God, this hot roller time is three to four minutes, tops) for body and I’m done!

Layers are good, not a ton of them, but some long layers. And cut so they flip under, not out.

I thought, like you, that since I was a big fattie (I know you’re not a big fattie) that I had to have long hair. A hairdresser convinced me otherwise.

  16. Kateastropheon 12 Oct 2007 at 10:54 am

I’ve seen you work your magic with scrap booking scissors. I trust your judgment completely.

And have the name of a GREAT stylist just in case.

Hahah. Just kidding. You’ve always had great luck with cutting your own hair.

  17. Thalia's Childon 12 Oct 2007 at 11:15 am

So I recently hacked all my hair off. Since I actually have a fat face as all of me is fat, I think I can speak to what would be flattering.

Jaw-length shag. Layers because layers frame your face softly and give more definition to chubbier-than-kate-moss cheeks. And then you can tuck it behind your ears, like I always do.

The beauty of the jaw length shag bob thinger (I am hairstyle impaired) is that it is wash and wear. I literally get out of the shower, rub a towel around on it for about 3 minutes and maybe comb it. Maybe. And then I go. And when it’s well cut, that’s all I need. (Right now, as I am desperately seeking new hairstylist I’m going through a raft of terrifyingly bad hair cuts, and seem to need a cut every 3-4 weeks. A good hair cut will last longer than 3-4 weeks)

I’d send you a picture, but my Super Sekrit Identity might be not so Super Sekrit if I posted a link right here on your page.

  18. Butrfly Gardenon 12 Oct 2007 at 12:19 pm

Okay, so when I cut my hair last, it was just longer than mid-back. (I got 13+ inches chopped!) The stupid (STUPID!) girl that cut my hair kept INSISTING that I should wear it curly (my hair is naturally very wavy, but each hair likes to do its own thing so I don’t generally mess with trying to make them curl TOGETHER). So, anyway, she cut it into a bunch of layers and scrunched it. I cried, told my mom not to tip her and spent the next two weeks deciding how the heck I was going to have my hair. Because I like to just wash my hair and throw it into a clip. I don’t style it unless I’m going someone slightly more exciting than work. So this short ‘do was a nightmare for me. I had to get up earlier every day to style it. So, my advice is that if you want hassle-less hair, don’t get a bunch of layers and don’t get it in a style that can’t stand on its own.

I’m waiting, hoping that my SIL’s friend will have me come in for her school. She just got a job with an elite hairstlyist in town and needs “models.” My SIL went in and got the CUTEST cut. I’m hoping, hoping, hoping. Because MY hair? Isnt’ even. Is drab. Is DEAD. Is just…icky.

I cut my bangs (I start at the chin and angle them to the bottom of my hair…it’s my old stand-by hair cut that I did for myself for years) just to make it look a little better around my face.

Okay, that was really long to not have a solution buried somewhere in it. Sorry.

  19. Kristaon 12 Oct 2007 at 1:36 pm

Well, this much I will say - although I’m not a hair expert! If you don’t want to spend too much time on your hair don’t get it cut too short. I’ve had long hair the majority of my life and while I think I look a bit more mature with shorter hair it drives me crazy. Because I always have to do something with it. and I’m a wash and go girl. I would agree with the layers though, that can add some dimension to your hair. Just make sure that either the entire cut is still long enough to fit in a pony tail or else that you don’t mind having some layers always hanging around your face. My hair is also wavy so if I were to “do” it short it would require blowdrying (read - damaging) and I’m not into that. If your hair is naturally straight you could probably get away with a lot more and have to fix it less.
Good luck and I want to see whatever you decide!

  20. Jo Beaufoixon 12 Oct 2007 at 2:26 pm

Brill, I think your hair is lovely and not all stringy in any way.
And I say ‘pshaw’ to your ‘fatness’ for tis a lie.
    You are lovely.

The bob ideas sound lovely though, and I love that first one on Kimberly’s links.

    Do it.

  21. Jo Beaufoixon 12 Oct 2007 at 2:27 pm

Hmmm, I see the word ‘lovely’ kind of got a little over used in that last comment.
    I blame the Port.

  22. Worker Mommyon 12 Oct 2007 at 3:20 pm

Ok, the whole fat face paragraph made my sides hurt from laughter.
If you change your avatar you and WhiskeyMarie could be twins ;)

I say cut it like Jenny McCarthy. I love her angular bob, that frames her face…but then maybe not conducive to a pony tail on those days when you just don’t feel like having it in your face.

  23. Worker Mommyon 12 Oct 2007 at 3:22 pm

Uhh and you’re not fat. Just embrace your hotness, Brill.

oh how i wish i had suggestions for you! i mean i could give you suggestions, but they won’t be current….my personal hair styling experience remains in the mid 90’s! ;-)

  25. Carla Streamon 12 Oct 2007 at 7:54 pm

My two cents. When my hair is Everywhere and style-less I go for 2-4 inches cut off. It feels lighter and looks better and is not soooo drastic. I like layers.(sorry butrfly)They add volume. Now that the cherubs are in bed(asleep)I feel like I could type all night…

  26. Rhondaon 12 Oct 2007 at 8:40 pm

Speaking as someone who’s had REALLY short hair and REALLY long hair- you can do it so it’s easy both ways- however….YOU can not do it so it’s easy both ways. LOVE your guts Brillig, but you should NOT cut your own hair. I really do hope that’s a joke. Also, I love your hair long, and typically, short hair and jaw length hair make a round (fat :)) face look more round or fat. That said….two suggestions:

    1. When you have it cut, trimmed, whatever…I’d suggest at least shoulder length (you’ve got GREAT HAIR, don’t hide it), but get it REALLY thinned. It’s the best thing ever- makes it look fuller somehow and gives it so much movement.

    2. Since I’ve had longer hair, every night, I flip my head over. OVER. the bath tub and brush my hair up (down) with a thick bristled natural brush and then throw that hair away- does away with a great big bunch of the hair that WOULD fall out. Can’t wait to see!

  27. Lotus Carrollon 13 Oct 2007 at 1:41 am

    Don’t cut it yourself!

Do realize that you are worth a little extra money on a haircut every now and then at a nice place.

Do not be afraid to go shortish. I did, and I have a fatish face, but it looks great. It shows off your neck, thin and contrasting!

    Do have it layered.

Have fun, and remember, it always grows back, unless you’re dead, and then who gives a damn!

  28. soniaon 13 Oct 2007 at 8:12 am

    Oh my Dear Sista!

You know me. I love your long and black hair, so i dont know what to tell you, maybe let yous husband to vacuum the house if that is the main reason!
For me, works, “trensas” or un poquito de aceite de oliva (frio o tibio) despues de lavarme la cabeza para uw no se me caiga el pelo en las puntas! try it, it works for me!
    hope to see you soon!

Gosh, I love Buzz… how would I have ever found you, if the lovely Farmer’s Wife hadn’t invited me?

First, your hair is beautiful. Second, I’ve never seen your face, so I have to take you at your word (at face value — ha!) and assume you have a “fat” face, even though that’s not what it looks like from that photo. So here’s what I’m going to recommend: jaw-length bob. You can funky up the back and make it shorter if you want, but the front should be jaw-length. Trust me. That cut gives everyone cheekbones. It’s universally flattering.

  32. Goofballon 13 Oct 2007 at 10:41 am

hmm I typed a long comment yesterday and it has saved empty! Argh.

Ok what I had said is that you shouldn’t lie: don’t tell us that your face is fat if you can hide it with a tiny little camera! You gave us the proof of the opposite!

Personally I cut my hair shorter and shorter over the last 2 years and I love the ease of shorter hair: i can still brush it a bit more sophisticated or I just make it funky with peaks using gel.

You seem to have a lot of hair. Maybe a bobcut would be cool for you? Cheryl did that and it looks awesome on her: http://www.peanutbutterandjellyboats.com/journal/andcut.html
I think it would suit you as well!

  33. newnorthon 13 Oct 2007 at 11:21 am

I have the same problem. No clue what to do with my hair. I gave up and everytime people cut it, or even talk about cutting it they think I will get upset. That I grew my hair long becuase it means so much to me, when really, I just couldn’t be bothered.

Good luck figuring out what to do :)

What?!? No ‘after’ photo? Come ON! ;)

  38. Annetteon 13 Oct 2007 at 8:09 pm

Another member of the fat cheeks club! Yay!

Seriously, I’m way with you on needing an easy hairstyle. The ponytail is my lifesaver on most days. I’ve got a bit of a funky natural wave, but if I comb it straight when it’s wet, it’ll dry straightish, and then when I have time later (or when I’m actualy GOING somewhere signficant) I’ll take a straightening iron to it and the bangs. A few layers at the bottom just for the sake of avoiding the straggle look.

This from the woman who hasn’t been to the salon since February. Yeah, I NEED a cut in a bad way. It’s TOO long now.

Let us in on whatever ‘do you end up with; I’ll have to take notes.

Totally brilliant title. I can’t say more, since the hair cutting has already been and done. But I do so love the title of this post.

  41. cherannon 16 Oct 2007 at 11:11 pm

    I have the same problem.

It annoys me when my blonde SILs point out how my hair starts falling out all over their houses when I come visit.

At least I’m not hairy. Because if I was hairy that would be gross if all that hair fell out too.
