Any Dream Will Do

Published by Brillig at 1:08 am under Blogginess

Remember how last week I was begging for bloggy topics? Well, y’all gave me lots and lots of fun ideas. I’m starting with my really random and almost entirely unmemorable encounter with Donny Osmond, because it was the most requested topic! Kate of What Defines Me, Luisa of Novembrance, CF of Canadian Flake, and Kate of Walking Kateastrophe all requested this story, so you can blame them…

Once upon a time, I was in high school. And I did what any good high school girl would do—I went to activities at the nearby university and passed myself off as a college student.

Among these adventures was (drumroll please….) Tunnel Singing. That’s right. On Sunday evenings, groups of BYU students would gather in a “tunnel” and sing music from the LDS hymnal. The music was beautiful, the acoustics amazing, and the eye-candy FANTASTIC. In fact, after many of these religious experiences, I may or may not have ended up making out with some guy I’d met there…

But I digress.

I went to Tunnel Singing for years, starting when I was 14, and passed myself off as a college student. Of course, sometimes I went with my older brother and his friends (who actually BELONGED there) but as they grew up and moved on, I started inviting my own friends—other high school students like myself.

One night, I invited my buddy Donny Osmond Jr. No one called him “Donny” by the way. He was just Don. He and I were never super close, though we were definitely friends. He was always dating some friend of mine, or I was dating some friend of his. We were always in the same group for date dances (including this one)—yes, friends, it was Utah. Don was a cool, zaney, whacky, and average teenager, who carried the great albatross of his father’s name. Not that he didn’t love his dad, or anything, but he wanted to be his own person and with a name like that, it was difficult. Especially in Utah. So we all helped him by not swooning over his dad or singing “And they call it ‘Puppy Love’” in front of him, etc.

Anyway, we invited Don to come Tunnel Singing with us. And we all had a great time. And then he told his parents about it, and Daddy Donny himself decided to come too!

So, we all piled into the Osmond family Suburban and headed off to Tunnel Singing. And once we arrived at the crowded event, I found myself seated next to Daddy Donny, all shmooshed up against him. And suddenly I started to think about my older sister Amy who’d had the world’s biggest crush on this Teen Idol. She’d had every LP, every pic on her wall from Tiger Beat magazine, and even Donny and Marie action figures! I KNOW!!! And here I was, shmooshed up against him!

I have to say that this was BYU—a place where every soul there would have known the name “Donny Osmond” and would have fallen all over him had he walked into the tunnel and said, “Hello, I’m Donny Osmond, you may now proceed to adore me.” But he didn’t. He was just another guy, singing like all the other guys there.

Anyway, he was very kind. Very sweet. He would lean towards me and harmonize with the part I was singing, and make me feel like the greatest vocalist in the world. But in true “friends with Don” fashion, I did my best not to swoon, freak out, or make an idiot of myself in any way.

And that’s it. I wish I could say that I’d grabbed him and kissed him, or even that I’d grabbed DON and kissed HIM—that would be worth some brownie points, right? Alas, no.

But, because I love all you Donny Osmond worshipers and I hate to leave you so disappointed, I’m including a little Donny clip for your audiovisual pleasure. Enjoy. :-D

I know I wouldn’t kiss him. Tunnel singing sounds really cool though. Intersting story. Laters Brill Brill.

But, in good “young women’s” fashion, you did offer to french braid his hair didn’t you? Love the video! Erin

i saw donny donny in “joseph” when it played in minneapolis. this was a hundred years ago, but my mom and her friend wanted us to hang out by the stage doors afterward to try to catch a glimpse. they were feeling some residual big love for him even before the show. afterward they were insane with it. i’ll have to pass along this story to her.

  4. Luisaon 08 Oct 2007 at 6:01 am

*Swoon.* *Sigh.* It’s the leaning in and harmonizing that would have slayed me. Tunnel Singing sounds awesome. How is it that I didn’t know about that?

Brillig, you’re a natural New Yorker. When I moved to the City and started having regular celebrity sightings (Billy Baldwin! Anthony Hopkins! Paul Newman! Jodie Foster! etc., etc.), I quickly learned that the cool thing to do was not to acknowledge their presence–not out of rudeness, but out of respect. A slight head nod is as exuberant as a New York fan will get.

“We know you need your space, just like we do,” the Manhattanite thinks as s/he covertly listens to the celebrity’s conversation at the next restaurant table over, or passes the celebrity in Central Park. “Besides, we see your kind constantly; this IS New York. Have a great day.”

    Too funny!

  6. Kateon 08 Oct 2007 at 7:53 am

That’s cool! Brings my own Tunnel Singing days to mind . . . not so “celebrity-enfused” as yours . . . Thanks for sharing the story! :)

  7. andion 08 Oct 2007 at 8:22 am

You know Donny Osmond? That’s insane!

  8. Anne Bradshawon 08 Oct 2007 at 8:24 am

One of our sons used to go Tunnel Singing at BYU and always made it sound a lot of fun and quite inspiring. Another son served in same London mission as young Donny and had nothing but good to say about him. Fun post, Brillig. Thanks for sharing the story. I can visualize it all :-)

  9. Kateastropheon 08 Oct 2007 at 8:35 am

Ok I’m sure I was there and yet . . .I have no recollection of this. Which probably means I wasn’t there . . . HAHA. Either way, brings back memories of tunnel singing and makes me miss you!!

  10. Jo Beaufoixon 08 Oct 2007 at 8:44 am

So, a bunch of you go and sing in a tunnel?
And people think Brits are, erm, a little eccentric…
    Fab story Brill.
    :D

I guess because I’m not a mega fan, but that video…what was that?!?lol Great story.

  12. Dedeeon 08 Oct 2007 at 9:26 am

Awesome story. And for those who haven’t been tunnel singing, don’t kock it till you try it! It’s awesome!

  13. Jessabeanon 08 Oct 2007 at 10:13 am

Great story! I’m intrigued by this tunnel singing now…

    And that video is hilarious.

  14. TheBakersRockon 08 Oct 2007 at 10:31 am

Oh tunnel singing. My goodness…memories I had long forgotten…hoping for sighting of Devin, or Mark S., or any number of other hot boys I was way too young for. My what fun that was!

  15. TheBakersRockon 08 Oct 2007 at 10:32 am

Donny as Joseph…my my. I need to get some crackers for the cheese now…

  16. Butrfly Gardenon 08 Oct 2007 at 12:30 pm

I see a big blank spot where the video is supposed to be. Stupid Work.

I’ve never felt anything for Donny Osmond, but I still don’t think I would have stayed cool in your situation! hahah!

  17. Jenny from Mommin' It Up!on 08 Oct 2007 at 1:03 pm

Harmonizing with Donny Osmond? My knees just turned to jelly!!

  18. Marie Greenon 08 Oct 2007 at 1:12 pm

Great Story! I had Donny and Marie Osmond BARBIE dolls as a kid… but I didn’t even know who they were, so it must have been a gift from some unknowing relative. They (the Barbies) even had little holes in their hands, to affix a Barbie-sized microphone. And they both came in purple clothes WITH purple SOCKS. But see? I have no idea why they had purple socks- only that any grown-up that saw them would exclaim- Oh, funny! They even have purple socks!

So? I think Donny was mostly before my time, and had it not been for those purple clad Barbies, I probably would know next to nothing about him.

(I would have been interested in his son though =)

  19. Mommasworldon 08 Oct 2007 at 1:41 pm

Tunnel singing. The sound must have been amazing. I was a Donney O fan when I was little, not a teenager yet or anything but still thought he was something else. Great story!

It’s always nice to also read about a celeb who’s a normal person and enjoys being around regular folks doing regular things. Great story!

  22. brandyon 08 Oct 2007 at 7:24 pm

I missed the Osmond craze, but join Jen in saying that I love hearing about a celebrity who was normal in “real life”. The tunnel singing sounds like it would have been amazing, almost as good as getting to sit up close to Danny O! ;)

  23. Thalia's Childon 08 Oct 2007 at 8:36 pm

I love the idea of tunnel singing way more than Donny Osmond. Very cool.

  24. BetteJoon 08 Oct 2007 at 9:53 pm

I went to see “Joseph” and Donny took the night off!! It was during the time he was experiencing anxiety attacks and horrible stage fright, so I blamed it on that and forgave him.

  25. Candace Salimaon 08 Oct 2007 at 10:00 pm

Great story - what an experience that must have been.

Love Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I was able to see Donny perform that when he did it here in Salt Lake - when his loin cloth fell off. That was so funny, just because he had feared it so during the five years he performed in Joseph. He’s really amazing in the role of Joseph. The clip brought back lots of good memories.

  26. Queenieon 09 Oct 2007 at 6:24 am

I used to plan my life around the Donny and Marie show. I just totally aged myself didn’t I? LOL! Great post Bril.

  27. Marianneon 09 Oct 2007 at 7:08 am

Count me in as a Donny fan from way back — in fact, my first ever slow dance was to “Puppy Love”, LOL…

    Great story.

  28. Fourier.Analyston 09 Oct 2007 at 9:53 am

Ahh, the memories…. I too was a Donny fan. I liked him even more than Bobby Sherman! (sigh) I live so vicariously through your adventures dear!!

What a great story! Thanks for sharing!

  30. Tracyon 09 Oct 2007 at 10:27 am

That’s one of the best brush with fame stories I have ever heard. Of course, because I was about 6 when he was the boy idol, I wanted you to check to see if his socks were purple more than I wanted you to kiss him.

I am now going to be on the lookout for a good tunnel, though…

  31. Worker Mommyon 09 Oct 2007 at 10:34 am

Only you, Brill, only you. I just love hearing about your life and your past. Thouroughly entertaining.

  32. Kimberlyon 09 Oct 2007 at 11:13 am

It’s kind of neat, that realization that famous people are just that…people.

A friend of mine met David Duchovney once. Was in the same elevator as him. He turned to her and said, “I guess this must be a big thrill for you.”

She made a snarky comment and stormed off the elevator in a huff.

    Glad Donny’s not like that.

  33. newnorthon 09 Oct 2007 at 12:16 pm

    Now that’s a cool story! :)

  34. VirtualSpriteon 09 Oct 2007 at 12:30 pm

Very cool story! And it’s so nice to see that he’s such a normal guy. My favorite soundtrack is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. I’m so jealous that you got to sing with him… but I’m also glad that it was such a good experience for you, too!

  35. Tristi Pinkstonon 09 Oct 2007 at 1:15 pm

I went tunnel singing twice with my young adult ward. Ah, the memories . . .

That’s a way cool Donny Osmond moment you had there. I’m afraid I would have freaked out if I was singing and he harmonized with me. You showed remarkable restraint.

Oh, we had the Donny and Marie dolls, by the way. :)

  36. Annieon 09 Oct 2007 at 1:38 pm

I still think he’s one hot bit of stuff! Even though he’s a grandad and everything now!

I saw Philip Schofield in Joseph - couldn’t hold a candle to Donny Osmond. (If you were in England when I think you were, you will surely know who Philip Schofield is?)

  37. Flower Childon 09 Oct 2007 at 3:13 pm

My older sister had those action figures too! The purple sort of rag looking outfits. And the album that went with it that Christmas. Wow. What a flashback.

  38. Soccer Mom in Denialon 09 Oct 2007 at 7:17 pm

Isn’t it fun when celebrities turn out to be normal?

  39. canadianflakeon 09 Oct 2007 at 7:58 pm

thanks for sharing the story…as always, your life is amazing to me!!

I loved this clip of dear Donny…loved seeing him last week cheering on his sister on DWTS. thanks again for sharing..

  40. Elizabethon 10 Oct 2007 at 5:57 am

I did 7 years of Choir in school, including a year in the Madrigal group, and I would have loved to have been able to do Tunnel Singing-the acoustics must have been amazing! We did “Joseph” for our musical my Senior year. Donny’s hair in that video? Not very flattering :) But the thought of him leaning against you to harmonize with you? Eeep! My heart.

  41. ladymacleodon 10 Oct 2007 at 10:38 am

    too cool!

  42. Jennaon 10 Oct 2007 at 11:51 am

This was a great post! Very fun memory. I love your life, Brillig.

That was a great story, I have been a fan for all of my life, I had an amazing Donny experience last November. (love to share if anyone is interested) As a active concert goer, I know Donny appreciates time when he can be just Donny and not DONNY OSMOND. Love that man - I respect and admire him. A true Donny freak as my husband likes to call me! Again thanks for the story it was great!

  44. jenn in hollandon 11 Oct 2007 at 10:06 am

And again that great divide of the 12 years between us comes into crystal clear focus….
Ah, me. I SO would have smooched him as I was smooshed up against him. Or his son. Whatever.

  45. Annetteon 11 Oct 2007 at 3:49 pm

    I guess I wasn’t a true Cougar–I never did go tunnel singing.

I performed in Joseph an eon ago. As I watched the clip, I couldn’t help sing along with the kids, “ah-ah-aaaaah.” Freaky how that music just won’t leave my brain in this life or the next.

OH, Donny, Donny. Who could not love the guy?

Glad you got to meet him and that he was so down to earth and nice.

His brother was my mail carrier in Ephraim. Any points for that?

    :)

  48. Karenon 13 Oct 2007 at 2:20 am

    Cool story! Thanks for sharing…

I’m a die-hard Donny fan who had the privilege to get to know him in the 80s (during what he calls his ‘lost years’ in the UK), so I know from experience what a genuinely lovely guy he is. He has never paraded around giving it the ‘big star’ treatment. In fact, I’ve heard it from his lips that he sees himself as ‘just the hired help’ when he’s making an appearance, performing, etc.

Your story conjures up some lovely images - how wonderful! Sitting in a tunnel, harmonising with Donny!!

Of course, I’m extremely jealous! :)

How can I spend all those years at BYU and not know about tunnel singing???? I even had a great voice back then since it was before my hospital adventure where they shoved tubes into my voicebox. Sigh! I miss all the fun!

  51. ElaineUTon 02 Nov 2007 at 6:55 am

Thanks for sharing! That was cool!

I, too, am an ‘old’ fan..:) If you think harmonizing with him is fun, try playing Pictionary with him! He came to my friends birthday party back in the late 80’s, and we played Pictionary with him…he’s a fantastic guesser! But a LOUSY drawer! He can’t draw a stick figure…!! LOL He had to draw the word ‘marquee’…(sp?) and it took forever to figure it out!! LOL He was getting so frustrated with his team because they just couldn’t make out his scribble! lol And you can’t talk while your drawing, so he kept making faces and grunting his displeasure…lol it was TOO funny!

  52. charretteon 30 May 2008 at 9:58 am

Too funny! Don jr. was in Jeff’s parents’ mission. We were just talking about him at their house on Sunday. The albatross followed him into their mission (London). Apparently the Osmonds are way huger in London than they are here. Bigger than the Beatles, if you can believe it. The press was hounding him for interviews, and all he wanted to do was normal missionary work.
He finally consented to do ONE live t.v. interview, and did a great job. Donny also came and gave a fireside…with crowds lined up around the block. Great family.

I would have LOVED tunnel singing.
I think this is the first (and only) time I’ve regretted NOT growing up in Provo! :)
