Under Contract

Published by Brillig at 12:16 am under Blogginess

Hey, remember how I was trying to sell my house? It used to be the only thing I talked about around here. I haven’t said a word about it for a while because, well, there hadn’t been much to say–till now. Basically, we fired our realtor about a month ago and then sat on it, not sure what to do. Then, just this last week, we decided to list it with someone else.

Two days later, we got an offer. Now, we’ve gotten several offers by now. But this one was different. It wasn’t an “investor” but rather a family. A family who had fallen in love with it.

And offered our full. asking. price.

Of course, things can fall through. I’m trying to hold off on the victory dance until the check has been cashed. Trying…

The people buying it are a young couple with four young kids. They fell in love with it for all the reasons that we did back in the day. It’s perfect of them, they’re perfect for it. Yay!

Of course, there’s a lot of work to do now. Lots of decisions need to be made about what to do with all our crap. Still, I’m not complaining. No sirree. No complaining here. Brillig no speak-a complain-o. I’m just acknowledging that there’s stuff to do now.

And, um… I need to find a babysitter for my beautiful grand piano. There’s no way I can move it up here, but there’s no way I could allow it to go into some nasty damp storage unit either. Sigh. My piano. It’s almost like a child–except it doesn’t eat as often, nor does it pour Lucky Charms into my bathwater…

Again, not complaining. Just concerned about my one and only earthly treasure. Any ideas?

Okay, but. Back to my house. You know. My house. Soon to be someone else’s house. This blog was actually born almost exactly four months ago, almost exactly the day that we listed the house. Obviously, I’ve vented here a lot. I can’t believe how agonizing this road has been sometimes and how suddenly it seems to be resolved. Closing date is set for August 11. Cross your fingers (and toes and eyes and hairs and anything else cross-able) for us!

StumbleUpon It!

A Lucky Charm bath? Do you know how much those cost at a spa?? Your kids just think you’re special. Good thoughts on the house closing!

  2. Annieon 24 Jul 2007 at 5:44 am

    Congrats and good luck.

If I wasn’t so far away - I’d lovingly watch and exercise your piano!

  3. CableGirlon 24 Jul 2007 at 6:02 am

Congrats. we just recently sold our place -before relocating down here to Miami - and I remember clearly how stressful that was. Of course I was also hormonal and pregnant so my view may be a little skewed. lol

Here’s to hoping the 11th goes smoothly for you.

  4. ~JJ!on 24 Jul 2007 at 6:03 am

    Oooooh! Good luck!

    I hope it goes smoothly…

I’m sorry about your piano…I understand how you don’t want to store it…

  5. shazon 24 Jul 2007 at 6:42 am

great news. congrats and good luck!

  6. Luisaon 24 Jul 2007 at 6:56 am

WOOO-HOOOO! I’m doing an early victory dance FOR you.

Piano-sitting: that IS a challenge. You might try Annette Lyon; I know she doesn’t live too far from you. Or Julie at Mental Tesserae. My sister already has a piano, and so do our friends the Borens. And that about wraps up my list of acquaintances in your area! Good luck. Of course you treasure it.

  7. jenn in hollandon 24 Jul 2007 at 7:46 am

Yes! That just may be the thing. Holding fists for you here!

(Did I tell you already about this expression? My Russian friend tells me this is the expression in Russian (duh!) for wishing someone luck. It is akin to our “crossing fingers”, but I think far more fitting. Fists seem to carry more power, no?)

ANYWAY, I have a musician brother up there in the SLC area with a musically inclined family who may have room and wherewithal to house your baby. You want me to ask him?

Hey! He lives by LAGOON. Happiest place on earth, right?

  8. Daisyon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:14 am

Congrats on the offer! Sending good vibes your way for a smooth closing….
I understand your attachment to the piano. I have the “family” heirloom baby grand in my living room. Sometimes I even play it!

  9. Kellyon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:48 am

You can send it here…I have a completely empty dining room with two inside walls! It would look great, and I’d be sure to play it for you so that it’s beauty isn’t wasted!

    Congrats on the offer!

  10. nellon 24 Jul 2007 at 9:45 am

Congratulations! I’d love a piano, I dream of a piano, but a piano would consume my tiny little living room in one single bite, even a piano that doesn’t eat much. Sigh.

I’m glad that the people are perfect for the house, it’s great when things fit like that!

  11. MammaLoveson 24 Jul 2007 at 9:48 am

Good luck!! Fingers crossed for you.

  12. Dawnon 24 Jul 2007 at 10:14 am

That is good news. I hope it works out. I know the waiting and transition time can be the worst. We sold and moved a couple of times in a 2 year period, and both times were quite quick transitions so we were thankful about that because there is less time to worry about things. We currently live in a small house for the 6 of us and numerous pets, so our piano is in the Master Bedroom as well as an extra TV. It makes our room the MB/family room. It is quite crowded. I couldn’t imagine finding a place for a grand piano. I hope you find a sitter for yours.

  13. Jewelson 24 Jul 2007 at 10:29 am

YAY YAY YAY!!! Congratulations! I will do the victory dance for you. Oh Bril, that’s awesome! I hope all goes well. Hmm, a Grand Piano - yes, I would love to store that for you in my living room. I would probably lay across the top in a beaded dress and sing the blues during Cache’s naptime. I hope you find a spot for it, I totally understand you not wanting to put it storage. Congrats, again!! Can’t wait to see you this weekend!

  14. Jenniferon 24 Jul 2007 at 10:37 am

Congratulations. I’ve got everything crossed for you!

  15. AbsolutelyBananason 24 Jul 2007 at 10:43 am

ooh how exciting! I wish I could babysit your piano for you… it’d look great in my living room, I’m sure of it!! :)

  16. Butrfly4404on 24 Jul 2007 at 10:58 am

You totally have my thoughts. My neighbors are finally selling their place…it’s been on since last summer. (AND! Theirs is on water! AND! They sold it for $20K less than we paid for our house!)

    Good luck!

And…they have storage units for stuff like that…where they are temperature controlled and everything. Call a few places around you and see if they offer anything like that.

  17. Kateastropheon 24 Jul 2007 at 11:39 am

WOOT! I am so happy for you and your little house too!

If I lived anywhere near you I would babysit your piano. Alas . . . I live in south Hell. :(

  18. Sugar Kaneon 24 Jul 2007 at 12:11 pm

    What wonderful news! Congrats!!

  19. Worker Mommyon 24 Jul 2007 at 12:26 pm

Sending you positive house closing vibes!!!!

  20. Jo Beaufoixon 24 Jul 2007 at 1:03 pm

Got everything crossed for you Brillig .
If it’s meant to happen it will happen.

It’s great that they’ve fallen in love with your house too.
It makes you feel like you’re leaving it in safe hands.
Hope you find somewhere for the piano.

  21. brandyon 24 Jul 2007 at 2:51 pm

Awesome! I was thinking of that the other day (lots of houses around here are on the market) and wondering what happened with your home that refused to sell. Hopefully this works out- not just because you want to sell it, because it sounds like the family that wants it would be perfect for it! Fingers crossed!

  22. Luisaon 24 Jul 2007 at 3:07 pm

I know you are surfeited with awards, but I couldn’t resist giving you another one today. See my blog for details.

  23. Omega Mumon 24 Jul 2007 at 3:29 pm

Hope it works out for you. And take care of that piano. After my pedal disaster I can tell you that you just can’t be too careful.

  24. LawyerMamaon 24 Jul 2007 at 3:30 pm

Ooh! Congrats! No ideas about the piano but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the house sale.

  25. Nanetteon 24 Jul 2007 at 3:42 pm

    Crossing! :D

  26. Soccer Mom in Denialon 24 Jul 2007 at 4:35 pm

I hope it works out. We are still in our “first” house. I’m not looking forward to the selling process. You give me hope.

  27. Annetteon 24 Jul 2007 at 6:11 pm

Moving and everything it entails (selling, cleaning, packing, cleaning again, unpacking . . .) is my idea of hell. Glad to hear you’ve got an offer and are one step further down the path. Crossing eyeballs!

  28. jenniferon 24 Jul 2007 at 7:39 pm

I just figured out that I need to update this link in my google reader… I’ve been missing out!
Congrats on your house- that’s a big, big deal. We’ll be looking to buy soon, so I’ll be grappling with the other end of the stick.
So glad I figured out why I wasn’t seeing you on my list…

  29. Marie Greenon 24 Jul 2007 at 7:47 pm

    Awesome news! Very exciting!
Hope it all goes well for you.

  30. Josion 24 Jul 2007 at 8:01 pm

I’ve got two piano players and I’d love to store your baby–but I live about 100 miles north of you, not sure that’s what you had in mind, but I’m willing.

As for moving, I think my husband decides to move about twice year so I really deep clean the house–then he changes his mind. You’d think I’d catch on after eight years here

  31. annoon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:24 pm

Excellent news! Exciting, too… good luck with the details.

  32. Goldyon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:28 pm

Maybe this has been covered before B… but are you moving to a new house or a new town or a new country?

  33. VirtualSpriteon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:29 pm

Wow! Congratulations. It’s so exciting to move… and so stressful. Here’s hoping everything goes well and you find someone for your baby. I would, but I already have one and she tends to get jealous. :-)

  34. Smiling Momon 24 Jul 2007 at 8:43 pm

Congratulations!! So, I’m guessing that you have already moved? Into a new house?

  36. Dieselon 25 Jul 2007 at 10:29 am

So that’s where me lucky charms went!

Congrats and good luck on the house sale.

  37. Janiceon 25 Jul 2007 at 12:19 pm

Hi. You’re tagged. Please play along. Check it out at my blog.
    :) Thanks

  38. Heatheron 25 Jul 2007 at 2:16 pm

Woohoo! Congratulations! Crossing everything I can think of and hoping it all goes through. What a huge relief.

  39. Burficaon 25 Jul 2007 at 2:20 pm

Hey hun, that is good news!!! Sorry I have been absent some. I’ve not been the best blogger buddy. To much dam drama around here. I think I might be drama free for a week or so. hehehehe

Hope you didn’t forget me. lol

  40. DangerDollon 25 Jul 2007 at 8:00 pm

Okay…so I’ve been sitting here with everything crossable crossed…the circulation’s getting cut off…could you please be sure to tell us the moment we can uncross everything? Thanks!

    (And: WOOHOO!!!!)

  41. Gunfighteron 25 Jul 2007 at 8:23 pm

Crossing and praying for you, Brill!

As for your piano, I am sure that it would be seriously happy in my living room.

  42. canadianflakeon 25 Jul 2007 at 9:37 pm

WOW congrats on selling the house…I will have my fingers crossed for y’all..and my toes…and my eyes too..lmao. Good luck finding a sitter for the piano, you are right that storage probably wouldn’t do it much good( can u tell I was a music major in University)..lol.

  43. Amberon 26 Jul 2007 at 8:25 am

Hey! Congrats on the house selling! I know the anxiety that goes with that well. It was fabulous to ‘remeet’ you last night. I know I know you more than just knowing a lot of the same people!

  44. cherannon 27 Jul 2007 at 11:37 am

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you.

  45. emmasometimeson 27 Jul 2007 at 6:45 pm

OH, doing the victory dance for you!!!

Gosh, that’s a hard one for your piano. The only thing I can think of is climate controlled storage. The place doesn’t have to be that big, but I know what you are going through. I had to give mine up because of a second floor but I got mine on craigslist and gave it to a friend. I still miss it.

Perhaps your church needs one? Then you know it will get played…

  46. ba doozieon 27 Jul 2007 at 9:17 pm

I was going to read all the comments to see what others suggested, but I”m lazy. Would your church take the piano? I can’t imagine any storage unit in your state being damp, does it ever rain there?

  47. fourier.analyston 04 Aug 2007 at 2:42 pm

Just catching up on all your blogs. Pressing my thumbs for you (the German way of wishing for luck!) I figure you can use all the cross-cultural help you can!!

As for the grand piano, we have never had luck selling such large items on ebay, but know of others who have. Plus there are a number of specific piano-selling sites who list for free and charge only a small commission. Use the power of the Internet sweetie and see if you can sell!!

Back to reading more (it’s tough when you are gone for a week!)
